The Classic Tetris church: DAS, hypertapping, rolling

The Classic Tetris World Championship began in 2010 because a documentary needed a winner and a message board needed a fight. Sixteen years later it is a church with three rites, a calendar, a gold J-tetromino, and a habit of minting children into world champions. The clips make it look like a novelty. The room is a sister civilisation. It has its own physics, its own dead, and its own argument about what a hand is allowed to do to a 1989 cartridge.

This is a field guide. Not a highlight reel.

The building

CTWC is NES Tetris, Type A, original (or faithful) pads, CRT if they can manage it. Qualifying is a high-score line. The main event is a single-elimination bracket, best of five from the later years, both players starting at level 18 on separate machines. Highest score takes the game. From 2016 the tournament ROM shows seven digits, because 999,999 had become a traffic jam. From 2023, level 39 is forced to a speed that effectively ends play. Controllers must be unmodified NES pads or reproductions close enough that the room accepts them.

The first event was 8 August 2010 at the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles, staged for Adam Cornelius's film Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Five seats were reserved: Jonas Neubauer, Harry Hong, Ben Mullen, Jesse Kelkar, Thor Aackerlund. Neubauer beat Hong. Prize: 1,000 dollars. Henk Rogers watched.

2011 almost killed it. USC, Electronic Arts money, poor turnout. Chris Tang still calls the move to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo a miracle. Portland held the thing from 2012 through 2023, except the two pandemic years online. Since 2024 it lives at the Pasadena Convention Center. The 2025 purse was 23,256 dollars. The 2024 purse was 32,069. The room got larger than the joke.

Three rites

The cartridge does not care how you press. The clock does.

DAS, delayed auto-shift, is the ROM's own walk. You tap, you wait a beat, you hold, the piece slides. This is how Jonas Neubauer built a decade. It is slower than what came after and it is not stupid. It is a conversation with the delay the programmers wrote. The Jonas Neubauer Cup, added in Portland after the world event left, is now North America's premier DAS tournament. That is how you treat a rite you outgrew without throwing it out.

Hypertapping refuses the delay. The pad is hammered, often by a tensed arm and a trembling thumb, on the order of 10 to 15 inputs a second. Thor Aackerlund did a version in the 1990s. Koji "Koryan" Nishio kept it alive into the 2010s. Joseph Saelee made it the default in 2018, reached live level 30, and swept Neubauer. For three years the church belonged to people who could vibrate on purpose.

Rolling arrived in late 2020, credited to Christopher "Cheez" Martinez. One hand holds the d-pad with slightly too little force. The other rolls fingers across the back of the pad, finishing each press. Faster than hypertap, less of a tax on the tendon. Jacob "Huffulufugus" Huff showed it could win rounds. By 2022 the Portland final was a rolling match: Eric "EricICX" Tolt beat Justin "Fractal161" Yu. The world record more than quadrupled. Former DAS players and hypertappers, including the Artiaga brothers, switched.

These are not cosmetics. They are three answers to one gravity curve. A DAS 999,999 from 2010 and a rolling 2.1 million from 2022 share a cartridge and do not share a body. The church kept all three names. That is the grown-up part.

The Artiaga house

Michael "dogplayingtetris" Artiaga and Andrew "PixelAndy" Artiaga learned the game from Saelee's 2018 final. In 2020, online, they played the CTWC final from separate rooms of the same house. Michael was 13 years and 16 days old. He won 3-2, youngest champion on the books, and said he had come just to qualify, which by then was already a meme stolen from Saelee. He won again in 2021 against Huff.

They are not a cute sibling act. They are the proof that a YouTube night can found a household religion. Michael stayed with hypertap longer than the meta wanted, the New York Times watching him handle a pad "with the breeziness of a cocktail pianist." Then he rolled. In 2026 he took a third title, 3-2 over "meme," after two-time champion Alex Thach forfeited a semi with an injury. First person since Neubauer to win three. First person to win a world title with two different rites.

Andrew has been in the last four more than once. The house produced a tournament of its own, Classic Tetris Brawl, before anyone asked it to.

Who held the gold J

Neubauer: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017. Hong: 2014. Saelee: 2018, 2019. Michael Artiaga: 2020, 2021, 2026. Tolt: 2022. Yu: 2023. Alex Thach: 2024, 2025, the 2025 bracket without dropping a game.

After Neubauer died on 5 January 2021, the trophy was recast. Gold J for the champion, silver J for the runner-up. On the back, his line: "If you're a high visibility player, it's on you to move the community in a positive direction."

The dead sit in the middle of this church, not on the poster and not at the door. Seven titles. A bartender who streamed his craft away. A heart that stopped in Hawaii at 39. The building kept his initial and his rule about visibility.

What the cute clip misses

The viral unit is always the same: a child, a legend, a screaming commentator, a CRT. "Boom! Tetris for Jeff!" in 2016. Saelee in braces in 2018. Two brothers in 2020. A 13-year-old asking the game to crash in 2023. Each clip is true. None of them is the civilisation.

The civilisation is the qualifying line that rose until veterans of ten years missed the cut. It is Classic Tetris Monthly, the Gauntlet, the Brawl, the DAS World Cup in Cologne, the Silver and Bronze brackets for people who did not make Gold. It is a Discord that will tell you every spin in minutes, work that took Jonas years. It is a 2022 local paper crowning the Silver winner as world champion, which is what happens when a scene grows faster than the reporters assigned to it.

It is also a ruleset that had to invent seven-digit scores and then a hard stop at 39, because the congregation had walked off the end of the manual. Churches do that. They write liturgy when the original book runs out of pages.

If you only watch the clip, you will think NES Tetris is a nostalgia sport that accidentally got good children. If you stand in the room, you will see a research programme with brackets. Three input methods. One gravity. A table that adds columns. A gold J that used to be a T.

That is a sister civilisation. Visit it as one.
