At 17:40 UTC on 7 October 2026, Steam had 1,161,855 people in Counter-Strike 2 and 858,084 in Dota 2. StarCraft II was not in the top 20 of that snapshot. Chess.com reported 10.2 million average daily players for the second quarter of 2026.
There is no single answer, because hard, most played, and worldwide measurable are different things. The scene's usual sorting still looks like this.
A worldwide competitive game is one where a result in Seoul and a result in Berlin are the same currency: a public ladder, a shared clock, or a rating that travels.

What counts as the hardest competitive game?
Among active esports titles, StarCraft II (and, historically, Brood War) is the hard one-against-one. It is real-time strategy. Economy, base-building, scouting and army control all run at once, with no pause. A missed supply block, or a timing that is off, tips the game minutes later. The usual short line in the scene is: chess at 300 km/h.
The ladder is still open. Season 68 runs from 20 July 2026 to 10 November 2026, with a grandmaster band on the Americas, Europe and Korea servers. In a 2025 pro compilation, a caster put Serral past 500 actions in a single minute. Speed is the texture of the game. The rating is the thing that travels.
Close behind, on other axes:
Dota 2 has the deep knowledge deck among the team games. A count in circulation on 30 September 2026 was 127 heroes, all of them free. Draft, items, map control, matches that often run past 40 minutes. In August 2026 a STRATZ cut of 8.2 million calibrated accounts put 359,691 of them in Immortal, 4.4 percent.
Fighting games (Street Fighter 6, Tekken) sit next to RTS when players argue about a ceiling you can see on one opponent: frame data, execution, the matchup chart.
Rocket League is the mechanical ceiling made of physics: aerials, rotation, very little luck. It does not appear on the Steam list below, because it does not live on Steam.
RTS players will tell you the genre is the steepest, and that the steepness is why MOBAs took the crowd. The snapshot agrees with the second half. StarCraft II is absent from the top 20. Dota 2 is second.
What is the most played competitive game?
Player counts, Steam concurrency, and an esports audience are three different rulers.
Source: SteamWatch, snapshot 7 October 2026, 17:40 UTC. Counter-Strike 2 first, Dota 2 second, AION 2 third, PUBG fourth. The same page an hour earlier had already moved. A concurrent figure is a minute, not a month.
League of Legends is the name people reach for when they mean the biggest. Riot's own fact sheet dates the monthly counts: over 67 million people a month in 2014, more than 100 million monthly active players in 2016. Trackers in 2026 still quote a band around 130 million for League alone. Riot has not published that band. League is not on Steam, so the chart above cannot see it.
The line that Honor of Kings still sits above League inside China is the one people repeat. A tracker read 51.9 million monthly players in May 2026, and 10.2 million on a typical day. That is the dated figure.
On the turn-based board, Chess.com's own quarter is the clean count: 10.2 million average daily players, 2.8 billion games, 14.2 million new accounts, 267 million members as of 30 June 2026. The FIDE standard list of 1 September 2026 holds 566,829 rated players, 220,503 of them active in the last year. Same game, two ladders, two sizes.
Which kind of game do you mean?
| Kind | Where you measure yourself | What the number is |
|---|---|---|
| First-person shooter | Counter-Strike 2 | People on Steam at one minute, and a Premier rank |
| Real-time strategy | StarCraft II, and Brood War before it | A 1v1 ladder. Actions per minute are the speed, not the rating |
| Turn-based strategy | Chess | A Chess.com rating, or a FIDE number |
| Team strategy | Dota 2, League of Legends | A medal. Dota also has the Steam minute |
| Fighting | Street Fighter 6, Tekken | A rank on that game's own ladder |
| Physics, cars, a ball | Rocket League | A rank. The ceiling is the touch |
Action is the shooter, the fighting game, the car. Strategy splits into real-time, turn-based, and the team game that borrowed the crowd from RTS. Ego-shooter is the first row: one gun, one angle, a rank that updates when the round ends.
Valorant, League, Honor of Kings and Rocket League can be the biggest thing in the room and still be invisible on a Steam chart. The chart only knows the games that clock in there.
Fact table
| Basket | Statement |
|---|---|
| Fact | SteamWatch, 7 October 2026, 17:40 UTC: Counter-Strike 2 at 1,161,855 concurrent, Dota 2 at 858,084, AION 2 at 371,763, PUBG at 270,313. StarCraft II was not in that top 20. |
| Fact | Riot fact sheet: more than 67 million monthly players in 2014, more than 100 million monthly active players in 2016. |
| Fact | Chess.com Q2 2026: 10.2 million average daily players, 2.8 billion games, 267 million members on 30 June 2026. |
| Fact | FIDE standard list, 1 September 2026, as counted on 13 September: 566,829 rated, 220,503 active. |
| Fact | STRATZ via Esports.gg, August 2026: 359,691 Immortal accounts, 4.4 percent of 8.2 million calibrated. |
| Fact | StarCraft II season 68: 20 July 2026 to 10 November 2026. |
| Hypothesis | StarCraft II is the hardest active 1v1 esport, fighting games share that argument on execution, Rocket League on mechanics, and RTS stayed small because MOBAs were easier to enter. That is the scene's sorting, not a measured ranking of difficulty. |
| Estimate | Tracker band of about 130 million monthly League players in 2026. Riot has not published a League-only monthly figure since 2016. |
| Folklore | "Chess at 300 km/h." The usual short line for StarCraft. Honor of Kings "often still above League" in China. The dated Honor of Kings tracker figure for May 2026 is 51.9 million monthly and 10.2 million on a typical day. |
